Rhode Island 2008 Legislative Agenda

Bi-Weekly Payment of Wages

Issue Overview: Rhode Island continues to be the only state nationally that prohibits private sector employers from paying wage earners bi-weekly.

NFIB Position: NFIB continues to support legislation that would allow employers to pay hourly employees biweekly instead of once a week. Currently employers operating in several states have to alter their payment method to operate in our state. This legislation would give businesses the same flexibility that federal, state, and local governments now enjoy. The bill exempts employees covered under valid collective bargaining agreements. The inability of Rhode Island employers to pay biweekly is just another negative mark for businesses operating here. By the way, Rhode Island is the only state with such an archaic statute.

Issue Status: NFIB/Rhode Island caused legislation to be introduced in both the House and Senate to repeal this insulting law. Strongly opposed by Labor.
