Editor's Letter: Cause and Effect
04/ 02/ 2008

by Rex Hammock, Editor and Publisher

In each issue of MyBusiness, we explore a wide array of issues and situations that affect small businesses. While this issue's primary focus is healthcare, we always try to include articles that touch on all aspects of a business' operation, from human resources to taxes.

Years ago, we'd be surprised when we discovered that an article that we originally thought stood on its own ended up relating to another article (or several) in the magazine.

That doesn't surprise us anymore. Indeed, we've come to understand that all aspects of owning and running a small business are interwoven parts of an ecosystem. Almost everything that affects one aspect of the business can have an impact on another.

For example, in this issue of MyBusiness, we have three features that may appear to be unrelated: “Solutions Start Here” on page 26 covers the new healthcare initiative being launched by NFIB; the Issue at Hand feature, which starts on page 32, takes an in-depth look at how immigration policies affect small business; and “Star Search: Simple rules for recruiting top talent” on page 38 covers employee recruitment and retention. But take a closer look and you'll see that these three issues are all intertwined. As you know from experience, your ability to offer affordable healthcare coverage affects employee retention. And for business owners like Aaron Harmon (whom you'll meet on page 32), the lack of immigration reform has forced him to scale back benefits for his workers who are U.S. citizens.

In the end, the challenges you face in running a small business all relate to one another. Helping you respond successfully to those challenges is the unifying focus of each issue of MyBusiness magazine—and of NFIB.

This article is from the April/May 2008 issue of MyBusiness.
