Washington, D.C.--The National Federation of Independent Business, the nation's leading small business organization, is changing the name of its legal division from the NFIB Legal Foundation to the NFIB Small Business Legal Center.
The NFIB Small Business Legal Center is the voice for small business in the nation's courts and the legal resource for small business owners nationwide. A 501(c)(3), tax-exempt public-interest law firm, the center litigates and educates for small business. Founded in 2000, the NFIB Small Business Legal Center has become a critical component of NFIB's influence.
"Our new name more accurately and simply defines for whom we work and what we do," said Karen Harned, executive director, NFIB Small Business Legal Center. "As a legal center, we hope small business owners, members of the media and the public will better understand and recognize the work that we do to serve as the voice of small business in the nation's courts and to operate as the legal resource for small business owners nationwide."
Since 2000, the NFIB Small Business Legal Center has participated in nearly 100 precedent-setting legal cases either as party plaintiff or by filing friend-of-the-court briefs in cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and federal and state courts. Additionally, the Small Business Legal Center has developed an impressive legal library and other legal educational programs for small business. These publications and programs are designed to help small businesses comply with certain key federal laws, such as the Fair Labor Standards Act, Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, and the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
