COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Jim and Greg Spearman of Spearman Electric in Greer have been named the 2008 Solveras/NFIB Small Business Champions for South Carolina by the National Federation of Independent Business.

"Their commitment to the community and their active involvement with NFIB/South Carolina demonstrates their dedication to small business," said Gary Selvy, regional director for NFIB, the state's leading small business association.

"Jim and his son, Greg, worked hard to get workers' compensation reform passed in South Carolina," Selvy said. "Greg and Jim lobby their legislators on important issues such as healthcare reform. They attend NFIB Area Action Council meetings so they can learn more about key legislation and talk to lawmakers about issues affecting them and other small business owners."

"The Spearmans will do everything they can to help small business, not only in their hometown but across the state," Selvy said.

Greg Spearman founded Spearman Electric in July 1998 with one employee and a single truck. Since then, Spearman Electric has grown into a multi-million dollar business with about 35 full-time employees and a fleet of 20 vehicles. Greg is president of the company, while his father, Jim, serves as materials control, personnel and safety director.

Spearman Electric supports several local churches and youth athletic programs. They contribute to charities such as Meals on Wheels, Foster Children of Greenville and the American Cancer Society. Spearman Electric is a member of the Greater Greenville, Greater Greer and Fountain Inn chambers of commerce. Spearman Electric joined NFIB in 2005.

"Our dedicated employees are the key to our success," Greg Spearman said. "We try to separate ourselves from the competition by offering superior quality and personal attention to each job."

Jim Spearman said, "Receiving this award is a real honor. It's humbling that NFIB believes we're helping the organization achieve its goal of promoting and protecting the right of its members to own, operate and grow their businesses."
