Full-day floor debates commence
All-day floor debates in the Nebraska Legislature began on March 4. With only 24 days remaining in the 2008 legislative session, lawmakers are expected to spend a great deal of time discussing controversial issues such as the death penalty, state aid to education, relocation of the state fair, tax relief, water issues, budget cuts and highway funding. These issues, along with many others, are contained within the priority bills selected by individual senators, committees and the speaker of the Legislature.
Gift card bill passes
Legislative Bill 668 introduced by Sen. Carol Hudkins (Malcolm) and supported by NFIB, was given final approval by the Legislature on Tuesday by a vote of 46-0. The measure will let merchants who do not assess fees or impose expiration dates on their gift certificates or gift cards with a face value of $100 or more maintain them indefinitely and avoid having to forward them as unclaimed property to the state treasurer. The legislation will take effect three months after the conclusion of the 2008 legislative session.
