Text Messaging
Issue Overview: HB291 was introduced seeking to restrict the use of cell phones or other devices used for writing or viewing text messages while operating a motor vehicle.
While most people understand that nothing should distract someone who is driving their car, our members were opposed to restricting the use of a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle when this bill was presented a number of years ago. Although text messaging and cell phone use is different, there is concern that legislation will further restrict small business operators and on-the-road sales persons from doing their jobs.
Issue Status: The bill sits in the House Public Safety Committee and expects to see a committee hearing in mid-March.
