Unemployment Insurance in Maryland
Issue Overview: The O'Malley Administration and labor groups are supporting legislation to allow part-time workers to qualify for unemployment benefits.
NFIB Position: The NFIB will oppose legislation that will add additional financial burdens on the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund, including but not limited to legislation that extends UI benefits to part-time workers. NFIB will support legislation that imposes a waiting week before individuals can receive unemployment insurance benefits and legislation which establishes a variable benefits system based on an individuals work history.
Issue Status: SB 328 and HB 627 Unemployment Insurance -- Eligibility -- Part-Time Work have been introduced and would provide unemployment benefits to part-time workers. A hearing was held in the Senate Finance Committee on Feb. 19. NFIB testified against this legislation. A House hearing is scheduled for Feb. 27.
