Part-Time Legislature
With Michigan's economy struggling and higher taxes being proposed every session, some have suggested that legislative term limits are not doing enough to curb the spending habits of Lansing and the growth of state government. One suggestion to address the issue is to eliminate term limits (or lengthen current terms) and move to a part time Legislature.
Many states have part-time legislatures provided for in their constitution that limit the number of days the Legislature can be in session. Typically the constitution will provide for no more than 90 or 120 days of session. Michigan's constitution would have to be amended to implement a part-time legislature and such an amendment would probably originate by a petition drive to place the issue on a statewide ballot. NFIB will be exploring the options for a part-time Legislature with members and stakeholders in 2008.
