NFIB/California Releases Statement Regarding the LAO's Budget Report
02/20/2008

CONTACT: John Kabateck or Michelle Orrock, 916-448-9904

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The National Federation of Independent Business/California released the following statement today in reaction to the Legislative Analyst's Office report on the governor's 2008-09 January budget proposal:

"California small business owners know that increasing taxes slows economic activity and depresses small business job growth," said John Kabateck, NFIB/California executive director. "The governor's January budget followed the lead of California families and small businesses by cutting out-of-control costs to deal with our state's spending problem."

"From day one, Governor Schwarzenegger has committed to reject tax increases on Californians. Unfortunately, some legislators are considering a series of tax increases that will put the burden squarely on the back of small businesses. Split-roll property taxes target businesses, increases to the Personal Income Tax rate hit the 80 percent of small businesses who file personal returns, and tax increases masquerading as fees threaten the livelihood of all Californians. We hope our state leaders will join with the governor in recognizing that taxing our way out of a budget mess is the wrong approach."
