State Labor Secretary Stephen Schmerin resigned his cabinet post effective Jan. 30. Gov. Ed Rendell nominated Schmerin in 2003.
As secretary, Schmerin oversaw the commonwealth's fifth-largest agency with more than 6,000 employees in 200 statewide offices. The department administers the state's workers' compensation, job retraining and vocational rehabilitation programs, along with its numerous enforcement and regulatory responsibilities. A replacement has not been announced.
