Marked by record-high voter turnout on an unseasonably warm night, Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) were the big winners in the Jan. 8 New Hampshire primaries. In this crucial second test of the candidates, Sen. Clinton made a surprising comeback by winning 39 percent of the vote in a contest that was too close to call for much of the night. Buoyed by a heavy share of the female vote, Sen. Clinton revived her campaign after what some predicted could have been the end, as Sen. Barack Obama's campaign surged after the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses. Sen. Obama finished in second place for the night with 36 percent of the vote. Finally, former Sen. John Edwards continued his fight for the nomination, earning third place with 17 percent of the vote.
On the Republican side, Sen. McCain won the state that had been a major factor in his 2000 fight for the White House, and earned the nickname "The Comeback Kid." He easily won with 37 percent of the vote, beating former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who came in second with 32 percent. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, fresh off of his Iowa win, came in third with 11 percent.
The results of the night have once again completely opened up the race for the White House. Additionally, the record high voter turnout, as officials predict the final total to surpass 500,000 votes, demonstrates the incredible significance and weight that the 2008 presidential race carries for every American citizen. The next big test for the candidates will be Jan. 15, when Michigan holds its primary. Following that, it's on to Nevada and South Carolina on Jan. 19, and Florida on Jan. 29. It all leads up to Super Tuesday Feb. 5, when 24 states hold their primaries. Stay tuned to NFIB.com/politics for election news and updates.
