Nearly 500 NFIB members recently participated in a series of employment law seminars hosted by the NFIB Legal Foundation. The three interactive seminars, which consisted of Web presentations and teleconferences and were available to NFIB members at no cost, covered the essentials of employment law and HR management from hiring to firing. Content from each seminar is now available on NFIB.com for both members and nonmembers to download.
NFIB knows that employment laws affect your business every day--whether you're hiring a new employee or dealing with the excessive absenteeism of another, knowing your legal responsibilities is crucial to avoid crippling lawsuits. To help small-business owners stay out of hot water, we teamed up with the nation's No. 1 employment litigation firm, Ogletree Deakins, to offer these interactive seminars exclusively to our members.
Part one: Legal and practical hiring strategies
In the first seminar, participants learned what questions not to use in the application and interview process, the dos and don'ts of background and reference checks and other pre-employment screening processes. This seminar also covered new-hire paperwork like the I-9 form, do-not-compete agreements and other personnel record-keeping issues.
Part two: Managing employees effectively and legally
The second seminar discussed ways to effectively manage employees while avoiding discrimination and retaliation lawsuits. Other topics explored include wage and hour laws, the top legal mistakes supervisors make, employee handbooks, absenteeism and personnel policies.
Part three: Terminating without a lawsuit
Participants in the final seminar learned how to properly handle employee terminations and found out how to correctly provide references for former employees.
