Despite ill-informed rhetoric that often says the federal death tax only affects wealthy people, this tax affects all Americans, and it strikes no one harder than the small-business community.
During every session of Congress, legislation to permanently repeal the death tax emerges into the political limelight for a short period of time, only to fade after a legislative defeat until the next session. While we're working hard for full repeal of this burdensome tax, we also recognize that a permanent cut is an important step in the right direction.
We support permanent death-tax relief and we're looking for members who have been adversely affected by this tax. Your story can make a significant difference in helping to persuade members of Senate to vote in favor of permanent death-tax relief.
Earlier this year, during a Senate Finance Committee meeting to consider legislation related to tax provisions of an agriculture funding bill, Sen. Jon Kyl (Arizona) introduced an amendment that would have provided permanent relief of the death tax. Kyl withdrew his amendment after Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus (Montana) agreed that the committee would hold a hearing on death tax before the end of this year with the goal of considering legislation in the early part of 2008.
Congress needs to hear from small-business owners. If you have a personal story about how this tax has hurt your business, please contact Kristina Blair at 202-314-2015.
