NASHVILLE--The National Federation of Independent Business, Tennessee’s leading small-business advocacy association, today announced Jim Brown has been named Tennessee state director, assuming the role previously held by Gary Selvy. Earlier this summer, NFIB named Selvy its South Region public policy director.

Brown is assuming his new role after serving as NFIB senior media manager in 10 states across the South the last three years. His new responsibilities include lobbying on behalf of NFIB/Tennessee’s members, as well as overseeing small-business grassroots activity across Tennessee and serving as NFIB/Tennessee’s media spokesperson.

“Small business has seen much progress in Tennessee the last several years, and it has been a privilege to be part of that trend,” Brown said. “I am eager to work with our membership and elected officials to help make Tennessee an even friendlier small-business state. I especially look forward to meeting our members at our grassroots gatherings across the state and taking their concerns back to Nashville.”

In his new role, Selvy is managing the public-policy operations for 10 states across the South, including Tennessee.

“It is an honor and a privilege to lead our impressive public-policy team across the South,” Selvy said. “I greatly enjoyed my time as state director in Tennessee, especially working with so many of our Tennessee members, but leave it in good hands under Jim’s stewardship.”

NFIB achieved much under Selvy’s watch. NFIB helped to establish into law a regulatory flexibility review process that will save small-business owners substantial implementation time and compliance costs. In addition, NFIB helped to defeat several job-killing bills that would have dampened free enterprise in Tennessee. NFIB also helped facilitate the enactment and implementation of CoverTN, the state’s new health insurance program for small business.

Remaining NFIB priorities in Tennessee include restoring vendors’ compensation to small-business owners for collection and remittance of the state’s sales tax, controlling runaway lawsuit costs borne by small business, and amending the state’s health insurance laws to remove mandate provisions for underwriting small group health plans.
