Employment laws affect your business every day--whether you're hiring a new employee or dealing with the excessive absenteeism of another. Ask the wrong question during an interview and you could end up in court! Knowing your legal responsibilities is a must to avoid crippling employment lawsuits.
To help you stay out of legal hot water, the NFIB Legal Foundation teamed up with Ogletree Deakins--recently named the nation's No. 1 employment litigation firm--for a three-part interactive Web presentation and teleconference that covered the essentials of employment law and HR management from hiring to firing.
Participation in the Web seminar was free for NFIB members and employees. One registration provided access to one phone line with an unlimited number of attendees listening at the site. Seminars began at 2 p.m. EST and lasted one hour, with an additional half-hour allotted for questions.
Part I: Legal and Practical Hiring Strategies, Wednesday, Oct. 10
Part one focused on reducing your legal risk during the hiring process. Participants found out what questions to remove from the application and interview process, the dos and don'ts of background and reference checks and other pre-employment screening. The seminar also covered new hire paperwork like the I-9 form, do-not-compete agreements and other personnel record-keeping issues.
