Minimum Wage in Nebraska
Issue Overview: Both the federal government and the state of Nebraska have minimum-wage laws. Earlier this year, both Congress and the state Legislature enacted an increase in the minimum wage. Nebraska's minimum wage applies to businesses which are not covered by the federal minimum-wage law. Primarily, these are businesses with less than $500,000 in annual gross receipts and which are not engaged in interstate commerce.
NFIB Position: NFIB opposes further increases in the federal and state minimum wage. Most businesses already pay above the minimum wage in order to attract and retain quality workers. However, businesses currently exempted from the federal law should have the flexibility to determine wage levels that the current Nebraska law provides. The marketplace, not the government, should determine the level of wages and prices charged by businesses.
Issue Status: Legislation could be introduced in 2008 that would increase the state minimum wage to a level in excess of the federal minimum wage.
What to Do: Contact your state lawmakers through personal visit, phone call, letter, fax or e-mail.
What to Say: Urge your state senator to oppose any legislation that would increase the state minimum wage to a level in excess of the federal minimum wage.
