Nearly one in five small-business owners report that wages, salaries and commissions are the single largest expense they have, according to the most recent NFIB National Small-Business Poll. That number rises to more than one-third (34 percent) among those who employ 20 or more people. Seventy-nine percent ranked the category in the top five of high-cost items. At the opposite end, only 2 percent report interest expenses as their largest single cost, while 28 percent report no interest costs at all.
