The Look Ahead: Campaigns in 2007 and 2008
01/10/2007

This year, voters in Kentucky, Louisiana and Mississippi will cast their ballot for governor, as Govs. Ernie Fletcher (Ky.), Kathleen Blanco (La.) and Haley Barbour (Miss.) are all seeking reelection, as well as all other state races, while state legislators in New Jersey and Virginia will be up for reelection. These contests will likely garner considerable national attention as both political parties seek to build upon or change the momentum created in 2006.

While much attention will be paid to the campaign for the White House in 2008, there will be races for governor in Delaware, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Utah, Vermont and Washington. There will also be races for the state legislature in these and 35 other states.

The control of Congress will once again be up in the air, as all 435 seats in the House of Representatives will be up for grabs.

2008 Campaign Preview

While the nation is just recovering from a heated election cycle, the races are already heating up for 2008, as the control of Congress will once again be at stake. As the political fields and candidates start to make their moves, NFIB will let you know which candidates and races to watch. Continue to check out NFIB.com/politics for more information about upcoming races.

2008 Races: Governors
Eleven states will hold elections for governor, three of whom are term-limited. Democrats are defending six state houses, including Washington, which was one of the closest races in 2004. Republicans are seeking to hold on to five states, including Missouri and Indiana.

2008 Races: U.S. Senate
The terms of 34 senators will expire in January of 2009, many of whom are expected to seek reelection. Given the slight majority, look for many of these races to be competitive.

2008 Races: U.S. House of Representatives
All 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives will be up for election in November 2008. Given the volatile nature of the recent 2006 election, there will likely be numerous competitive races. Of those in Congress, 71 representatives were elected with 55 percent or less, and will likely face strong challenges in 2008. Continue to check out NFIB.com/politics for information on these and other races.
