Cities Seek Ability to Levy Local Sales Taxes
Issue Overview: The Kentucky League of Cities and other local government organizations are seeking to pass a constitutional amendment that would allow the local option of an additional sales tax. This would be levied on top of the current 6 percent state sales tax. The cities are arguing they need additional revenues from a broader funding source.
NFIB Position: NFIB/Kentucky members resoundingly have voted to oppose this passage of this legislation -- 91 percent of NFIB/Kentucky respondents said "no" to a local sales tax option on the most recent State Ballot.
Issue Status: Legislation is expected to be introduced in the 2007 General Assembly. NFIB/Kentucky members are urged to contact their state senators and representatives, and encourage them to oppose this bad small-business bill.
