New airline security regulations to remember before flying home for the holidays
After British officials prevented a terrorist plan last August involving liquid explosives on planes traveling to the United States, security at the nation's airports ramped up--and screening lines slowed down. If you will be flying to your holiday destination, here are some tips to make your airport visit run a little more smoothly.
New rules
Though the regulation banning all liquids from airplanes has now been lifted, new restrictions are still in place in regards to the amount of liquids, gels and aerosols travelers may bring with them. The Transportation Security Administration has implemented the "3-1-1 Rule," which allows each ticketed passenger to carry onto the plane:
- 3-ounceor smaller containers of liquid or gel
- one quart-sized, clear plastic, zip-top bag to hold all of your 3-ounce or smaller containers
- one bag per traveler placed in the security bin for screening
The 3-1-1 rule also applies to holiday gifts, so think twice before putting items such as jams, salsa, sauces, perfumes and even snow globes in your carry-on luggage. Exceptions include baby formula and breast milk (if a baby or small child is traveling) and all prescription and over-the-counter medications. TSA recommends reviewing its full list of permitted and prohibited items before flying.
Plan ahead
TSA recommends you arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight is scheduled to take off, as you will undoubtedly need extra time to get through security checkpoint lines. The TSA Web site offers an estimate of how long it will take to get through security lines at airports around the country. Note, however, that times listed are historical averages and do not include extra delays for holidays, weather or special events.
Other tips to keep in mind before heading to the airport include:
- Pack valuable and fragile items like laptops, jewelry and important medications in your carry-on bag.
- Make sure not to wrap any gifts you might be carrying (security must be able to inspect everything you are carrying and will unwrap presents if needed).
- Pack few metal items, such as keys, coins or cell phones in your carry-on bag.
- Lighters may not be carried on the plane (even if they do not contain fuel), but you may bring up to four books of safety matches. You may pack up to two fueled Zippo lighters--but no matches of any kind--in your checked luggage.
- Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off, as every traveler must now remove his or her shoes for screening at the security checkpoint.
The holidays are a joyous time that should be spent with family--not stuck in line at an airport security checkpoint. Following these tips can help everybody get through the hassle and off to their destinations on time and safely.
