Thinking about renting a car on your next business trip to save money on taxi fare? Think again. Not only will you have to endure the headache of navigating unfamiliar streets and snagging tight parking spots, you could be slapped with exorbitant hotel parking fees. Hotel parking in downtown areas of cities with limited space, such as San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, Boston and New York City, can cost between $30 and $50 a day, and that doesn't include valet tips.
You're likely to save more money if you take a cab or use public transportation. Visit the American Public Transportation Association's Web site at www.apta.com/links to find public transit links listed by state. If you must drive, check parking rates before you book your hotel. Compare hotel package rates that include parking with regular rates to make sure that you're getting a good deal. And consider booking a hotel outside of the center of town, since parking fees in those areas are much cheaper.
