Tech Talk: Trend Tracker
11/ 21/ 2006

Become a Geek in 2007

It's that time of year again: All those technology-related things you've been putting off, you can now resolve to do in early 2007. To help, MyBusiness prepared this starter-list of New Year's resolutions for the tech-challenged small-business owner:

  1. Set up a Google Reader account: You can skip this one if you already have a newsreader set up. Chances are, however, you're still avoiding the efficiency you could gain by using the technology called RSS, or real simple syndication. There are several great free or inexpensive RSS newsreaders available. However, Google Reader has made it even easier by not even using the term RSS. Think of it as a easy-to-setup page you control that will go out and constantly look for the news you want to follow, and them compile it all on one page.
  2. Purchase a digital camera that is small enough to have with you at all times. The best camera is the one you have with you. And if you record white board notes, post photos to your company's Web site, or take quick video clips of someone demonstrating a "how-to" procedure, you'll discover a small digital camera is a mighty important business tool.
  3. Rethink your data backup strategy. If you don't have a backup strategy, then start there. A weekly backup to a CD or DVD may be enough. You can easily afford one of the many new hardware storage devices or online services that are making data backup a snap. No matter what you pay, it will seem like a bargain if you ever loose critical data.
  4. Stop being in technology denial. It may disappoint some, but the "Internet fad" is not going away. It's time to rethink (or create) your Web strategy and begin exploring newer, easier-to-use online tools found that can help you run your small business.
