Congress Returns for Lame Duck
11/13/2006

Work remains before close of 109th Congress

Now that midterm election results are in, Congress has begun its lame-duck session with plenty to do in a short amount of time. The 110th Congress--and the change to Democratic control--may factor into many legislative decisions here at the close of the 109th Congress.

NFIB's small-business priorities will remain the same:

  • Solutions that provide access to affordable, quality health care
  • Permanent extension of small-business tax relief passed in recent years and tax code simplification
  • Legal reform to protect small business from frivolous lawsuits
  • Regulatory reform to ease complex, expensive and unnecessary burdens

Though appropriations bills for 2007 are at the top of the list for Congress in the next few days, several other pieces of legislation may also come up before adjournment, including some tax relief and tax-cut extensions. Congress may also attempt to raise the minimum wage above the current federal rate of $5.15 an hour.

Congress' 2007 schedule is expected to be full, but NFIB is committed to working with members--both old and new--to ensure the small-business agenda is recognized and supported.
