What began as a small truckstop in 1965 has now grown to be the largest truckstop in the world. The Iowa 80 Truckstop, owned by NFIB member Delia Moon Meier and her family, provides fuel, food (including a fast food court), parking, gifts, convenience items, truck accessories, tire and engine service work, truck scales and a truck wash.
The Iowa 80 Truckstop is located at exit 284 on I-80 in Walcott, Iowa. It employs 1,000 employees, including four of Moon Meier's family. In addition to everyday activities, each year the employees busy themselves as they prepare for the truckstop's annual Walcott Trucker's Jamboree (July 12-13, 2007). This year will be the 28th year for the event that features over 175 exhibits, games, live country music and so much more.
The Iowa 80 Truckstop is anything but an ordinary truckstop. The enthusiastic employees pride themselves on driver satisfaction. "Because our business is small, it better allows me to adapt to our customer's needs, without have to go through a big bureaucracy," said Moon Meier.
Moon Meier personally became involved with NFIB in 1995. She became active when NFIB began having Area Action Council meetings in Davenport with various legislators. "I enjoy working in small business, but I feel the biggest problem for small businesses is the government mandates and regulations that don't serve our customers' needs or our employees' needs, but rather a special interest group," said Moon Meier.
