Midterm Election Returns In
11/08/2006

Small business looks to 110th Congress for results

Yesterday's election turned control of the U.S. Congress over to the Democratic Party after one of the most intense midterm campaigns in recent memory.

"Though the leadership in the Congress may have changed, the goals of small business remain the same," said NFIB President and CEO Todd Stottlemyer.

"Small-business issues transcend party lines and we want to work with lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to create an environment where businesses can flourish and grow and strengthen the American economy. That's what NFIB is all about, promoting and protecting the right of our members to own, operate and grow their businesses. The key is providing a climate within which to do that," he added.

Stottlemyer thanked the thousands of NFIB members who worked nationwide during the past several months to elect officials who will support small business.

"Our members know that having lawmakers who support small business makes a critical difference in their success. NFIB will continue our members' work in state capitols and in Congress over the next two years," Stottlemyer said.

Top items on the NFIB legislative agenda include:

    • Solutions that provide access to affordable, quality health care
    • Permanent extension of small-business tax relief passed in recent years and tax code simplification
    • Legal reform to protect small business from frivolous lawsuits
    • Regulatory reform to ease complex, expensive and unnecessary burdens

(Editor's note: Story updated Nov. 9 to include results of Virginia Senate race, which also determined control of the U.S. Senate.)
