Diana Quick may not remember exactly when she joined NFIB, but she knows she has had a NFIB sign at her business as long as she can remember. Like other members, Quick first joined NFIB to ensure that her needs as a small-business owner could be represented in government.
Quick started her catering business, Food With Flair Inc. in 1982 from her kitchen at home. "After three years we moved to a larger location and then 14 years later we moved again to our own building which is 5,000 square feet," said Quick. "We are known for our freshly prepared food, buffet presentations and excellent staff. We also provide event planning services for all types of events."
Food With Flair employs four full-time employees and 30-40 on a part-time basis. They have catering jobs every day except Sunday serving as many 1,500 people at some events
Quick's daughter, Jobeth Hanke, is the manager of Food With Flair and they have been working together for the past 23 years. In addition, Quick also employs other family members in the wait staff.
"You can't find better help than someone who cares about your business and has watched it grow," said Quick.
Like other small businesses, Food With Flair feels the burden of heavy taxes. As a licensed business, Quick must also compete with unlicensed food and service businesses that do not face the burden a $20,000 a year liability, vehicle insurance and workers' compensation payment. Quick feels very strongly about this issue, pointing out that unlicensed providers are not health-inspected and "no one seems to care until someone gets sick."
Owning her own business has given Quick an opportunity to do exactly what she loves. More importantly, owning Food With Flair allows Quick to take time for the truly importantly thing in life.
"In our business you could work every day and lose the most important thing that you have, your family," Quick said. "I feel very blessed to have succeeded in this business, but I could not survive without my faith because today is such a changing environment."
