As a small-business owner, you make a difference in the lives of your employees every day. But as a member of your local business area, have you ever thought about ways you can make your community just a bit better for those around you?
We're not talking about spending money to sponsor a little league team--although that is a great way to support activity in your community--we're talking about giving of your heart and time and tailoring that gift to your own interests and talents.
Whether you have a week to give or an hour a week, there are several opportunities to volunteer and get involved in your community:
- Want to do something active? Donate your time and sweat to building a local home with Habitat for Humanity.
- Love to read? Read and record books for the blind in your community.
- Is there a budding chef hiding inside you? Volunteer once a month at your local food bank or soup kitchen.
- Did you miss your call as a teacher? Give your time and patience to tutor local students in your favorite subject.
- Concerned about the environment? Look for neighborhood adoption and cleanup opportunities.
- Grandkids live two states away? Spend time at your local Boys & Girls Club, playing games or reading with the kids.
- Love animals? Volunteer to walk dogs at your local shelter during your lunch hour once a week.
- Want others to learn about your great city? Become a tour guide at your local museum or visitors' center.
- Love the outdoors? Volunteer as a trail guide or keep those trails maintained and ready for visitors.
- Concerned about the smallest citizens? Give of your heart and time to rock newborns in your local hospital's pediatric ICU.
Getting involved in your community is a great way to step out of your role as a small-business owner and step into the role of active local citizen. And if an opportunity arises with a chance to give locally, perhaps the employees in your company will be moved to volunteer alongside you.
No matter how you choose to give of your time locally, know that it will be appreciated. With every dog you walk or meal you distribute, you're making a great difference.
