The state Bureau of Elections has indicated that it will recommend that the petition signatures submitted by the Stop Over Spending (SOS) ballot proposal organizers be rejected by the State Board of Canvassers at their scheduled meeting this Friday.
According to the bureau's findings, the petition drive actually turned in less than the 317,757 valid signatures required to have the question placed on the ballot.
Although proposal supporters have indicated that they will challenge the bureau's decision in the courts, this action makes it likely that the spending limitation proposal will not be on the November ballot. NFIB members supported the proposal in a survey conducted in early August.
Sept. 8, 2006 update: At a meeting this morning of the Board of State Canvassers, the board agreed with the recommendation from the Bureau of Elections that the petition signatures for the Stop Over Spending (SOS) spending limitation not be certified. This means that it is official that the issue will not be allowed on the November 2006 ballot. Although the SOS supporters have indicated that they will take the matter to court, past experience on similar issues has shown that it would be rare for the court to reverse the Board of State Canvassers decision.
