Local NFIB member recognized for his activism

LANSING, Mich. -- The National Federation of Independent Business/Michigan recently recognized Tom Zimmerman, owners of Spectrum Automation Company in Livonia, as its 2006 Small-Business Champion. The NFIB/Michigan Leadership Council selected Zimmerman to receive the award in honor of the work he has done to promote the cause of small businesses in Michigan.

The NFIB Small-Business Champion award program identifies a small-business activist in each of the 50 states. These small-business owners have distinguished themselves through their involvement and participation in NFIB programs and activities that promote the issues important to Michigan's small businesses.

Spectrum Automation Company has been a member of NFIB since 1976, and Zimmerman has been a leader in the company's activism. Specifically, he has met with President Bush on several occasions to discuss the way tax and business initiatives will affect small businesses. He has also met with legislative leaders at both the state and federal levels to highlight small-business issues.

In addition to his political and legislative involvement, Zimmerman has played a key role in organizing and securing funding for two NFIB Young Entrepreneur Scholarships in Michigan.

Zimmerman is a member of the NFIB/Michigan Leadership Council and his local Area Action Council. He has traveled to Washington, D.C., on several occasions to participate in the NFIB National Small-Business Summit and he has served as a spokesperson for the organization in both print and broadcast media.
