With Congress out for recess until after Labor Day, now is the perfect time to meet with your lawmaker in person and share your small-business priorities.
Though last month the House passed a bill that included a permanent reduction of the death tax, in the Senate the bill failed to get the 60 votes needed to proceed. Set up a meeting with your lawmaker and let him or her know that death-tax relief is crucial for the small-business community.
Also let your representative or senator know that though Small-Business Health Plans did not receive enough votes to proceed in the Senate, the bill has not been forgotten. The vote was close: S. 1955 received 55 of the 60 votes needed, and NFIB and the small-business community are not giving up. Tell your lawmaker that small business still deserves to be treated fairly, and deserves access to affordable health care just like big business enjoys.
If you cannot schedule an in-person meeting with your lawmakers while they are home on recess, send a fax or e-mail with your message using the online tools at NFIB.com. Let lawmakers know that passing SBHP and death-tax reduction legislation would allow small-business owners to provide health-care benefits to their employees and spend their money on growing their business--and the American economy. Remind your lawmaker that as the No. 1 job creator in the country, small business demands to be treated fairly.
