The November elections are your chance to help strengthen the small-business community by voting for pro-small-business candidates--but are you prepared?
NFIB believes that one of the best ways to support free enterprise is to elect and re-elect the candidates that support small business. A chance to make your voice heard, voting is one of the most important actions you can take to stand up for small-business owners across the country.
Registering yourself to vote is only the first step--make sure your friends, family and coworkers are educated about the importance of voting as well. Let them know about deadlines to register, the different ways to vote and the importance of taking this opportunity to impact public policy.
Though you have until October in almost every state to register to vote, early voting in some states begins as soon as next month, so make sure you, your family, friends and coworkers are ready to hit the polls. You can register in person at your local elections office, or online at NFIB.com/polVoterInfo. Also be sure to check NFIB's election calendar for all of your state's important election deadlines.
As a small-business owner your schedule is packed, so if you aren't sure you'll be able to make it to the polls Nov. 7, you can always cast your ballot early. Early voting is available in almost state and runs for a specified period of time before the elections, letting those who can't make it--or want to avoid potentially long lines--on Election Day. Your polling place for early voting can differ from that of Election Day, so check with your elections office to find out where to cast your vote.
If you aren't going to be able to vote in person, make sure you request an absentee ballot. Voters usually apply for an absentee ballot by mail, and most states require that you provide a reason for the request. After your elections office approves your request, it will send you a ballot to complete and mail back. Depending on your elections office, you may be required to request and fill out your absentee ballot in person.
Spread the word
The results of this year's elections will undoubtedly have an impact on your business, so informing as many people as possible about the importance of reelecting pro-small-business candidates is crucial. For information on how to educate others on issues and candidates, refer to NFIB's guides.
