NFIB members look forward to long-awaited tax repeal
LANSING, Mich.—With one week remaining until legislators are scheduled to vote to repeal Michigan's burdensome Single Business Tax, members of the National Federation of Independent Business/Michigan are eagerly anticipating the long-awaited relief the death of the SBT will bring.
"Repealing the much-despised SBT has been a dream for our members since the day the tax was adopted almost 30 years ago," said Charlie Owens, state director of NFIB/Michigan. "In my almost 25 years of public policy experience, this has been a No. 1 goal for Michigan small business."
NFIB/Michigan has been at the forefront of the repeal effort and has lobbied aggressively on behalf of its 20,000 members statewide who overwhelmingly supported repealing the tax.
"Although we are entering a very uncertain and dangerous time in the debate over business taxation, particularly in light of the replacement tax debate, we would be remiss if we did not take a moment to contemplate the significance of this event and celebrate the end of 'the worst business tax in America,'" Owens said. "With the end of the SBT in sight, we can really get to work on making Michigan a pro-business, pro-job environment again."
Owens indicated that NFIB remains committed to working for fairness in small-business taxation as the debate over any new business tax develops.
