Early voting begins for primary elections
The statewide primary election and county general elections will take place Aug. 3. This year's general election will be Nov. 7. As small businesses, it is important to be actively engaged in the vote process. Here's the complete schedule:
- Early voting period for primary: July 14-29
- Election day (State primary and county general): Aug. 3
- Last day to register to vote in the November general election: Oct. 8
- Early voting period: Oct. 18-Nov. 2
- Election day (State and federal general election): Nov. 7
If you haven't already done so, please register to vote. You can find your elected officials by visiting www.legislature.state.tn.us.

Sales-tax holiday set
In August, Tennessee will hold its first annual sales-tax holiday, which will give shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers and clothing tax-free for a specific period of time. The tax holiday will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 4, and end at 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 6. During this time, retailers may not charge tax on items that are legally tax-exempt. U.S. Patent and Trade Office to hold Nashville conferences
The U.S. Patent and Trade Office will hold "The State of Copyright in the Digital Age" on July 17, and "Intellectual Property in the Global Marketplace" on July 18, both in Nashville. U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn will be the featured speaker at the July 17 conference, which will address how copyright laws can best protect intellectual property in the Internet age. The meeting is from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Vanderbilt Marriott on West End Ave. For more information, please visit the link below.
The USPTO will also present a one-day conference on July 18, also at the Vanderbilt Marriott from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., on intellectual property basics for small and medium size businesses, entrepreneurs and independent inventors. Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property Steve Pinkos will deliver opening remarks. The conference is free, but seating is limited.
