Successful small businesses find ways to use technology to gain a competitive edge. But according to a poll from NFIB's Research Foundation, small-business owners' perception of how technologically savvy they are is often far from reality.
Fifty-eight percent of those who responded expressed confidence that they are staying technologically abreast of their primary competitors, and another 36 percent believe their adaptation of technology is more advanced than competitors. But the poll also shows that fewer than two-thirds employ high-speed Internet, and just 39 percent have interactive Web sites.
Sixty-one percent of small-business owners think the technology used in their industry is changing rapidly, though they are often hesitant to make changes themselves. One-third adopt the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy and are satisfied to leave current technology in place as long as possible.
