Buying Guide - How to find the right laptop case
09/ 27/ 2005

A laptop computer without a carrying case is an accident waiting to happen. Cases designed specifically for laptop computers can add to the life of your computer, protecting not only the exterior but also the hard drive. But with so many kinds available, it's hard to decide which one is best for you. Consider these tips when shopping for a laptop case:

Pad it: Whether you carry your laptop from home every day or rough it up on a construction site, padding plays an important role in protecting your computer. For easy commutes, a padded sleeve should provide enough protection. But if your commute involves shoving yourself into tight spaces, such as crowded buses or subway cars, look for bags with a hard exterior and a padded inside compartment.

Stuff it: If you carry more than a laptop, look for a case made of a light material that won't add extra weight. Stuffing extras like pads of paper, pens or PDAs into the laptop compartment of a case can cause items to jostle or even break, so look for cases with separate compartments to accommodate everything else.

Lug it: If you travel frequently, think comfort when choosing a case. Messenger-style cases that disproportionately distribute the weight on your body can leave you with a crick in your neck. Instead, opt for a backpack, which distributes the weight evenly, or a rolling bag, which takes the weight off altogether.

Access it: For frequent fliers, make sure you can access your laptop case quickly and easily. Cases that open at the top are generally most accommodating, but any case will work, as long as you don't have to take a seat or stop in the middle of the security line to get to your computer.
