Small Business Voice Strong With Governor
Thursday brought a chorus of good news for small-business owners from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's office with the veto of two bills strongly opposed by NFIB. The governor vetoed AB 48, the minimum-wage indexing bill, by Assembly Member Sally Lieber; and SB 174, the frivolous employment lawsuit expansion bill, by Senator Joe Dunn. An e-mail campaign by NFIB members solidified the ultimate fate of these bills.
In his AB 48 veto message, the governor reasoned that the automatic annual increase mandate would harm the economic health of California, and that it further hampers employers under an already burdensome labor law system. On SB 174, the governor stated that the creation of a new "shakedown lawsuit" category violated the will of California voters who passed Proposition 64 as part of an effort to put an end to frivolous lawsuits. NFIB congratulates the governor on making the right decision for small business and California's economy.
