Today, AAA issued a nationwide news release urging motorists to take seriously the issue of fuel conservation during the next few weeks. AAA's daily energy conservation guidelines, excerpted from the AAA brochure "AAA Gas Watcher's Guide," are available from AAA clubs and can be downloaded from the Internet and printed.
"It's serious enough that we're calling on all Americans to learn and follow fuel conservation techniques during the next few weeks that will help the nation cope with the effects of Hurricane Katrina on the gasoline and refining distribution network in the United States," said Dave Carlson, AAA director of Public and Government Affairs.
AAA Idaho said this is the most effective way individuals can protect themselves from high prices and the possibility of local fuel outage.
The advice encourages motorists to systematically rethink their approach to fuel consumption, rather than adopting just one or two techniques. Some of the key tips contained in the guide are:
-
Change driving attitudes. Make fuel conservation a top-of-mind behavior when choosing the vehicle to drive, the distance of the destination, and what trips and errands to run.
-
Consider driving style consequences. Save fuel by slowing down, maintaining steady speeds, and avoiding rapid acceleration and sudden stops.
-
Don't pursue counter-productive fuel savings efforts. Topping off a nearly full gas tank and joining gas lines out of a sense of panic can only contribute to the possibility of fuel shortages.
The guide also includes practical tips regarding vehicle maintenance as well as options regarding alternate transportation and using the proper grade of fuel.
