Maryland Override Process
The power to override a veto rests with the General Assembly. If the governor vetoes a bill, the veto message (bill) must be considered immediately at the next regular or special session of the legislature. A three-fifths vote of the elected membership of both chambers is necessary to override a veto.
- 85 delegates and 29 senators are necessary to override a veto.
- The Maryland General Assembly is not expected to go into a special session, so the veto override vote will likely take place on the first day of the 2006 Maryland General Assembly, Jan. 11, 2006.
