Senate Republicans Push for Legal Reform
06/13/2005

The Senate Republican Conference Friday showed its dedication to putting an end to frivolous lawsuits with the release of its legal reform agenda, which outlines key problem areas under the current system.

Legal reform is a top issue for the National Federation of Independent Business. Frivolous lawsuits create a climate of fear for America’s small businesses. While some claims are legitimate, a large percentage of them are completely without merit. However, individuals and entities that are sued still have to defend themselves, and this defense is often costly to both business and consumers.

“NFIB members say that being sued is one of the most threatening experiences for a small-business owner, especially for the smallest of the small, which can be put out of business by one lawsuit,” said Dan Danner, NFIB executive vice president of public policy and political. “NFIB will continue to support reforms of the legal system, including sanctions against attorneys who bring frivolous lawsuits.”
