ARIZONA -- Today it was announced that Prescott businessman Malcolm Barrett is Arizona's 2005 "Small Business Champion" of the year.

The state honor was conferred upon him by the Leadership Council of the Arizona chapter of NFIB, America's largest small-business advocacy group. Each year, NFIB singles out a small-business owner in all 50 states for special recognition and honors him or her with its prestigious "Small Business Champion" award. This is the second year the national group has awarded small-business owners who go the extra mile for mom-and-pop companies. Last year's winner was Kirk Adams of Mesa.

Barrett is owner of Whiskey Row Partners of Prescott and Patriot Propane in California. He will compete with Small Business Champions in 11 western states for a regional award.

"Malcolm Barrett's story is an inspirational one," said Michelle Bolton, NFIB/Arizona state director. "He's been a naval aviator, a commercial airline pilot, a successful high-tech and propane entrepreneur in three states, and a savvy business investor, but no where has his good work been felt more widely than in his service to Arizona's Main Street firms, all of which have benefited from his tireless advocacy on their behalf. Whether testifying for or against legislation or helping small-business owners with a difficult problem, Malcolm Barrett has always been there when the engine of the American economy needed him."

A Vietnam veteran, Barrett's wide community and business association involvement includes membership on the Governor's Small Business Executive Committee in the Hull Administration, Arizona Chamber of Commerce, Arizona Propane Gas Association, Greater Arizona Development Authority, and the Yavapai County Sheriff's Air Group, just to name a few.

For NFIB Barrett is a member of the state's Leadership Council, a donor to the Federation's Leadership Trust, and an active participant in its Prescott Area Action Council. Barrett is the father of four children and 11 grandchildren. He and his wife, Nancy, make their home in Prescott. He can be reached for further comment at (928) 776-1881.
