Minimum Wage Increases in Arizona

Issue Overview: An established state minimum wage would be a direct blow to small business, making them less competitive with big businesses that are able to absorb the extra costs associated with minimum wage.

NFIB Position: NFIB opposes a state minimum wage in Arizona.

Issue Status:

  • HB 2331, introduced by Rep. Gallardo. HB 2331 repeals the prohibition against local governments establishing a minimum wage that exceeds the federal minimum wage. A state minimum wage is set at $7.10 per hour with provisions for yearly increases based on the GDP price deflator.
  • HCR 2018, introduced by Rep. Gallardo. If passed by the legislature, HCR 2018 would allow the 2006 general election ballot to carry the question of amending state labor law to set the minimum wage at $7 per hour plus annual increases for inflation.

Both bills are waiting for a committee assignment and hearing.

What to Do: Your lawmakers need to hear from you before they consider the minimum wage proposal! If you are concerned about the state instituting a state minimum wage that is above the federal minimum wage, please contact your lawmaker via mail or telephone and tell them your story today! If you do not know your lawmaker, please call the NFIB/Arizona office for more information.
