Benefits Of E-Filing Your Tax Returns Outweigh Perceived Drawbacks

Most taxpayers want their taxes prepared and filed as easily, correctly and quickly as possible (especially if a refund is expected). "E-filing your tax return is a sure way to help achieve all three goals," says Jim Southward, EA, President of the California Society of Enrolled Agents. Enrolled Agents are tax professionals licensed by the federal government to represent taxpayers and assist them with tax planning and preparation.

"Although e-filing is certainly the way to go in most cases, some taxpayers are still reluctant," says Southward. "But the additional cost of e-filing can be offset by speed, accuracy and peace of mind."

Among the benefits of e-filing your tax return:

Faster refunds

Most e-file refunds are issued within three weeks, and you can get your refund within a week if you've selected direct deposit.

More accurate returns

Computer checks are done prior to transmission, and IRS computers then automatically check for errors and missing information.

Certain delivery and quick confirmation

You may recall that last year, several sacks of tax returns were lost en route to the IRS. E-filers get a confirmation of receipt within 48 hours.

No paperwork for you or the IRS

Paperless returns are less expensive for the government to handle, and of course you're saving the cost of printing and mailing.

Convenience

You can e-file any time of the day or night, and both complex and simple returns can be filed electronically.

Easy payment options

You can schedule an automatic withdrawal from your bank account to pay taxes, so you can e-file now and pay any monies owed on April 15.

Forty million tax returns were e-filed in 2001 (up from 27 million the year before). Nearly three-fourths of those returns were e-filed by tax professionals.

"An Enrolled Agent is the best navigator to get you through the rough seas of the Internal Revenue Code and IRS Regulations and ensure that you pay the lowest required tax," says Southward.

Enrolled Agents are tax professionals licensed by the federal government to represent taxpayers and assist them with tax planning and tax return preparation. Taxpayers in California can locate an Enrolled Agent in their area by calling toll-free 800/TAXPRO-5 or online at www.csea.org. Outside California, the Enrolled Agent referral number is 800.424.4339.
