Small Business Owner Raises Big Amounts of Money
01/02/2003

Steve Lonegan says he doesn't move in circles with wealthy people. But that doesn't stop the Bogota, N.J.-based businessman from helping raise tens of thousands of dollars for small-business friendly candidates each year.

"I'm an activist," says Lonegan. "I don't just sit back and take things."

Not only does he help raise money for candidates, Lonegan himself is involved in politics, serving as mayor of Bogota.

Fighting for small business is something Lonegan has dedicated himself to, since he's signed the front of paychecks for many years. Formerly the owner of a kitchen cabinet manufacturing industry, Lonegan recently sold the business and entered the homebuilding industry, opening American Prestige Homes.

"If we don't get out there and fight for things that will empower small business owners to be successful, the the government will beat us down," says Lonegan, who has been an NFIB member for more than six years. "There are two ways to get involved: You can give of your time, or you can give of your money.

"NFIB members can't be afraid to fight for change. Nobody is going to do it for us."
