Hiring a Good Lawyer
12/ 10/ 2002

by Vicki Gerson

If you are thinking about hiring an attorney, you need to find a good business lawyer who understands the problems, challenges and opportunities facing small businesses. A good attorney will not only protect you and your business from legal troubles, he or she will also help you look for investors and deal with bankers.

How do you find an attorney that is right for you and your business?

You might start by asking your business associates if they would recommend their attorney. Also, your banker and accountants do business with many attorneys, and might know a lawyer who is right for you and your business.

You can also do some research on your own. Legal directories providing brief biographical information on lawyers in your area should be available at your library. State bar associations offer free referral services as well.

Before you hire a business lawyer, ask if there is a free consultation. It is important to meet this professional face-to-face. Make sure you discuss fees at this meeting. Find out the hourly rate and fees for other business services throughout the year.

Other important questions to ask at this meeting:

  • Are you a member of the state bar?
  • Can you practice in the federal courts? (This is important if you do an extensive amount of interstate commerce.)
  • How long have you been practicing?
  • How long have you had your firm, and where did you practice before?
  • What kind of businesses does the firm represent?
  • Finally, be sure to ask for at least two references you can call.
