Small Business Economic Trends -- November 2002

Small business optimism was nearly unchanged between September and October. Hiring plans rose by four points to a net 11 percent of all firms. Capital spending plans were steady at 30 percent of all firms. Inventory investment plans dropped, but remained strong. More firms raised selling prices in October than September and worker compensation was up as well. Sales trends were softer, but profits were favorable.
