Preventing Theft During the Holiday Season and Year Round
11/ 20/ 2002

by Vicki Gerson

Shoplifting is a serous problem in the business world. All employees should be aware of typical shoplifting methods. This is one of the best ways they can help you stop shoplifting at your business.

The most common method is to put the merchandise in a purse, shopping bag, briefcase or even a closed umbrella. Many shoplifters tape a lining of foil inside their shopping bags or purses. This defeats the sensors attached to merchandise.

A second common method used by shoplifters is to conceal the merchandise in clothing. Shoplifters can hide merchandise under a draped coat or wear the item under their shirt or pants after emerging from the dressing room. To prevent the latter, have someone keep track of the number of items that are being taken in the dressing room.

Shoplifters may wear special clothing that helps them steal. Concealed pockets or a slit in one pocket of a coat may allow the transfer of merchandise to a large storage place inside the garment.

Another technique is switching the price tag. This works when prices at your business are changed frequently and cashiers can't remember the prices of the items. Computerized pricing helps stop this type of theft.

Professional shoplifters have also been known to work in pairs. This is done to divert attention. While one engages the clerk in conversation, the second takes the merchandise.

Share this information with your employees, and remind them to be vigilant and work together to stop thefts at your place of business.
