Protecting Your Computer System
11/ 14/ 2002

by Vicki Gerson

The old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is true when it comes to your computer system. There are simple precautions that you can take against viruses and computer hackers, both ongoing problems for businesses of all sizes.

Just this year, computer hackers were able to discover a Ford Motor Credit Co. password and use that password to access 13,000 customer applications from Experian. And if hackers can get information from well-protected large companies, just think of what they could do to an unprotected small business.

One major security solution that all small and mid-size business owners should consider to keep hackers out of their system is firewall software. Don't go to the nearest computer store and purchase the first firewall system you see on the shelf. Ask your Internet service provider what the company recommends. It also pays to ask your computer technician what he or she recommends. And ask other business owners what firewall systems they have installed.

A firewall isn’t the only protection you need. Especially if your employees have Internet access, you could be vulnerable to computer viruses. If your computer system is attacked, you’ll need to hire a knowledgeable computer technician who can eliminate the viruses without destroying the files. This usually isn’t cheap.

Talk to your employees about Internet safety. Tell them not to download any games, as they could contain viruses. Also tell them not to open any attachments that come in emails from unrecognized addresses. Doing so is one of the most common ways computer viruses are transmitted.

Most importantly, if you don’t have anti-virus software installed, do so immediately. Once again, talk to your computer technician about installation.

Though you may not want to face the extra costs of these preventative measures, think of the alternative--losing valuable files or leaking private customer information. You’ll see that firewall and anti-virus protection are among the best business investments you can make.
