DOL Program Helps Businesses Recruit Women for Non-Traditional Jobs

Many types of small businesses from auto repair shops to construction companies
have traditionally been staffed primarily by men. However, the Department of Labor
is taking steps to make jobs under-explored by women easier for them to obtain, and
also to make it easier for employers to hire them.
Under the "Women in Apprenticeships and Nontraditional Occupations" (WANTO)
initiative, the DOL recently granted $100,000 to organizations that help employers
establish apprenticeship programs and recruitment strategies aimed at hiring women
for non-traditional jobs.
"Apprenticeship training is a great opportunity for women to gain valuable skills
that can advance their careers with better-paying jobs," said Labor Secretary
Elaine Chao. "By expanding the skills of America's working women, we are addressing
the needs of our workforce and assisting women in the development of rewarding
careers. When women win, families win."
