The old saying "it won't happen to me" is a poor excuse for not taking the necessary steps
to prevent robberies. Robbery threatens your business, your employees and your customers.
But by following the precautionary measures outlined by Jeffrey Moses in today's Workshop,
you can greatly reduce your chances of becoming a target for robbery.
1. After dusk, lighting should be increased in your office or store and surrounding
areas.
2. Don't take trash out at night. Shred confidential information regarding bank account
numbers, credit cards numbers, access codes or PINs, before throwing it out.
3. Back and side doors should be locked at all times.
4. Non-employees should not be allowed into private work areas for any reason.
5. Never open doors at night unless the visitor is recognized or proven to be authorized.
6. Exterior doors set off a buzzer when they are opened.
7. When the office or store is closed, all doors should be locked. Procedures should be
established so that employees routinely and systematically lock and check all doors upon
closing. All alarm systems should be enabled at specified times.
8. Never count money in front of customers or other non-employees.
9. Always stay alert to your surroundings when you are carrying money out of your business,
even if itÆs a trip to the bank in broad daylight. When taking a night deposit out of the
store, position a car close to the front door so that it can be entered quickly.
