Opportunities in a Downturn
03/ 28/ 2002

Here is additional insight on the business opportunities present during a recession from William Dennis, senior research fellow at NFIB's Education Foundation:

"Everything depends on your personal situation," Dennis says. "You talk to a lot of small business owners and this is the best year they've ever had. Not everyone is affected the same way."

Just because economists say the recession officially started in March 2001, that doesn't mean your business is going to see negative numbers.

"The first thing to remember is not everybody is impacted the same way," Dennis says. "The second thing is how you're affected depends on how you adjust to it. Just because your neighbor is doing well or badly doesn't mean you'll do well or badly. The best thing is to be willing to adjust your business to the economic environment."

This Web extra is a supplement to the MyBUSINESS cover feature, "5 Strategies to Grow in Any Economy," which appears in the February/March 2002 issue.
